One of the leading figures of the European Higher Education Area, Doris Herrmann, spoke to Saygı Ünlü on Haberler.com. ENQA Vice President Herrmann emphasized that accreditation is key to improving educational quality, stating, "In a competitive world, Türkiye must invest in quality assurance."
Doris Herrmann, ENQA Vice President and AQAS Director, who plays a significant role in shaping quality assurance policies in the European Higher Education Area, was a guest on the Bilim Gündemi program hosted by Saygı Ünlü in the Haberler.com studio. From the accreditation requirement introduced for universities in Türkiye to the future of European standards, Herrmann evaluated many critical topics and highlighted the importance of student-centered learning.
"ACCREDITATION IMPROVES THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION"
Explaining the impact of accreditation on university students, Doris Herrmann said, "The common goal of all types of accreditation, whether national or international, is to improve the quality of programmes. External experts evaluate study programmes and provide recommendations for improvement. Graduating from an accredited programme also facilitates recognition across Europe."
"WE AIM FOR AUTOMATIC RECOGNITION"
Herrmann stated that recognition in education is becoming increasingly facilitated across Europe, saying, "If you graduate from a recognised and accredited programme, the goal is for it to be automatically recognised by other institutions in Europe." She added that efforts towards automatic recognition are ongoing.
"TÜRKİYE'S INVESTMENT IS A SMART STEP"
Evaluating the accreditation requirement introduced for universities in Türkiye until 2026, Herrmann said, "I believe that the Turkish Higher Education Quality Council guiding universities towards quality assurance processes is a very smart step. We live in a competitive world. You must improve yourself and enhance your education."
"BUSINESS AND LAW ARE LEADING FIELDS"
According to AQAS data, Herrmann noted that business, economics and law programmes account for the majority of accreditation applications in Türkiye, stating, "Out of 85 programmes, 45 are from these fields. Humanities, engineering and arts are lagging behind."
"STUDENT-CENTERED LEARNING MUST BE STRENGTHENED"
Referring to upcoming updates in European standards, Herrmann said, "Strengthening student-centered learning will be a priority in ESG standards." She emphasized that students should not be passive listeners but active participants in the learning process.
